UoL Cricket Club members under investigation by police after alleged assault

Members of a University of Leicester sports club are under investigation by police after allegedly assaulting another student.

Police were called just after midnight on Thursday 25th September to Granville Road after ambulance services took one man to hospital.

A witness said “around 30 members” of University of Leicester’s Men’s Cricket Club were at the scene: “They were just stood there watching, some of them committee members.”

“It was seven men fighting one person. I’ve never seen anything quite like it.”

According to the witness, the fight started after one cricket club member “harassed” a man and woman walking through Victoria Park. They said the man allegedly threw the first punch to “defend his girlfriend”, after which roughly six more men joined in.

The student was then taken to hospital for three days. A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said his injuries were not life-threatening or life-changing.

“He couldn’t speak, his words were slurring and he kept bleeding. I thought he was going to die,” the witness said.

A spokesperson for the University of Leicester and its Student Union said: “We have been made aware of the alleged incident, which is being investigated by the police. We take such matters extremely seriously.”

University of Leicester’s Student Union suspended the Men’s Cricket Club following the alleged incident. However, a society suspension is only two weeks long; as of now (20th Jan 2026), the club are still competing.

They went on to say: “Once the police investigation is concluded, the University and Students’ Union will take any necessary action in line with our policies and disciplinary procedures.

“As this is an ongoing investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”

The police say no arrests have been made and anyone with information is asked to contact them.

University of Leicester’s Men’s Cricket Club were asked to comment, but they did not reply.
